When the new settlers came to this country there was plenty of natural resources.  In the southern U. S.  log cabins were built using longleaf pine.  Today the longleaf pine forest are rate but with the help of government programs and agencies encouraging the reforestation of the longleaf pine the longleaf pine eco system is growing once again.  This eco system is vital to the gopher tortoise survival as well as other wildlife species and plants.

Additional sign-ups for continuous CRP programs-such as Highly Erodible Land Initiative and Initiative to Restore Grasslands, Wetlands and Wildlife-will begin May 13, and will continue through Sept. 30 2013.

Contracts on acres expiring  in September 2013 and producers with expiring contracts or producers with environmentally sensitive land are encouraged to evaluate their options under CRP.

Property Tax & Tax Appeal Workshops

The Georgia Forestry Association will hold a workshop to help inform landowners about timberland property tax valuations and what to expect when challenging tax appraisals.  Space is limited so we encourage you to register prior to May 15.  There is a fee for the workshop of $65.00 per attendee – second person in same family – $30.00  A late fee of $10.00 if registered after May 15, 2013.

Did you know that in today’s world techno gadgets such as iphones, ipads, and the such is not the only things changing.  In the world of forestry, genetics is beginning to play a major part in what landowners buy to plant for future use.  Today when you purchase seedlings be sure to ask what the genetics are of the seedlings you are getting.  Nurseries can now supply you with such information as productivity rating, rust resistance grade, stem form and forking grade.  “KNOW BEFORE YOU GROW”

Did you know that the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contributes to the nation’s efforts to continue to improve water and air quality, prevent soil erosion by protecting the most sensitive areas even those areas prone to flash flooding and runoff.  CRP has restored more than two million acres of wetlands and two million acres of riparian buffers.  This keeps more than 600 million pounds of nitrogen and more than 100 million pounds of phosphorous from flowing into our nation’s streams, rivers, and lakes.

Do you know what fatwood or fatlighter is?  Fatwood or fatlighter is the term used for kindling or fire starter wood.  The wood has been aged and dried as pine tends to ignite easily and burn hotter than some other types of wood.  This makes a great wood for kindling.

International Forest Company (IFCO) is a family owned and operated business located in Moultrie, GA.  IFCO specializes in container pine seedlings or sometimes called tublings, more importantly Longleaf, Loblolly, Slash, Shortleaf and Virginia Pine for private, industrial and governmental landowners from Texas to North Carolina to central Florida.  For 2013 IFCO will produce over 60 million seedlings, Longleaf, Loblolly, Slash, Shortleaf, Virginia Pine.

IFCO has been producing container seedlings since 1983 and in 2005 IFCO became a total container seedling company.  Container seedlings are proving to have a better survival rate as well as more resistant to disease.  When container seedlings are extracted and shipped, they maintain 100% of their root systems compared to bare-root seedlings that could lose up to 40% of their roots during extraction.  IFCO also provides Longleaf and Loblolly seedlings for the coastal and piedmont regions.  Be sure to let your sales  representative know where you intend to plant so you will receive the right Longleaf or Loblolly seedlings.

IFCO also offers planting tools, ‘elite’ family seedlings, and mycorrhizal inoculation.  Our company is now producing Eucalyptus seedlings.  Eucalyptus is now being grown not only as windbreaks around orchards but also for bio-fuel.

IFCO is now working in several orchards collecting pollen to help with future breeding to produce an even better quality seedling for our customers, who deserve the best for their tree management projects.

Pine Seedling Planting Tool

Mr. Bell demonstrates the planting tool used for planting container seedlings.  The planting tool can be used to plant container longleaf, loblolly, slash, shortleaf, Virginia pine, eucalyptus and wiregrass.

The tools’ tip is designed for the container plug.  Once the tool is pressed into the soil and removed (soil removed) the plug fits into the ground and the soil is  pressed snuggly around the seedling to close any air pockets.
