Wiregrass container plugs seem to do very well if planted in the fall and winter months the same season as pine trees. The plugs can be planted with a mechanical tree planter, produce plug planter, or hand planted using a tree dibble. Soil moisture the first few months is very important to seedling survival.
How many Wiregrass plugs should be planted?–4,000 per acre if you want a solid stand in a couple of years. A minimum of 1,500 per acre on a 6′ x 6′ spacing has resulted in adequate stands.
When to burn?–You can begin to burn the area afer the first year and this will suppress competition and encourage growth of the new seedlings.
